The Helderberg ward of Stellenbosch is situated just 5 kilometres from the shores of False Bay. The ward takes its name from the imposing Helderberg mountain which is Afrikaans for “clear mountain” and culminates at a height of 1’137 metres. The area is unique in that it benefits from both maritime and montane influences. The cool south easterly wind blowing in directly from False Bay serves to reduce day- time temperatures significantly during the growing season. This is a key terroir characteristic, differentiating the Helderberg from those situated over the hills further inland, which have less direct exposure to the ocean. The wines produced here are heavily influenced by cool sea breezes and ideal soil conditions.

Wade Metzer
Wade Metzer studied agriculture at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology and graduated in 2002.
He has travelled and worked in wine regions including Graubünden, Switzerland; Priorat, Spain; Burgundy and Roussillon, France. In 2010 he completed a post graduate diploma in Wine Business Management at the UCT Graduate School of Business.
During his time in Europe, Wade affirmed his affinity for Shiraz, believing no other red grape variety, is capable of responding so articulately to different terroirs; its potential unmatched throughout the world, particularly in his native country.
Wade is a true believer in the power of vineyards to express a sense of “somewhere-ness” in the final product.

Francois Hanekom
Destined for a career in viticulture, he cut his teeth in Bonnievale and Piketberg, working with both wine and table grapes — a six-year stint that set the course for Francois’ fascination with precision viticulture.
Returning to his hometown, Somerset West in 2003, he managed a large wine estate in the shadow of the Helderberg for 4 years before the opportunity to strike out on his own presented itself.
Concentrating on properties under the Helderberg’s propitious West Peak, Francois has made a name for himself by managing all aspects of prime vineyards, from new plantings to turning ugly ducklings into award-winning swans. The high prices achieved for the grapes and the awards won by wine made from these vineyards attest to his accomplishments.
Not least amongst these is the success of his mentorship and on-going education of a large and loyal workforce. With 80 highly motivated permanent employees he is able to rise to any challenge presented by changeable conditions and capricious vineyards.
