Welgegund was established in 1777. The heritage wines, all handcrafted from old character plantings on our farm in Wellington, celebrate a unique combination of the decomposed granite terroir, the exceptional light and the timeless mastery of the winemaker, and offer an enduring expression of the classic Cape wine tradition so globally envied of this region for centuries.

Welgegund is delighted to have had Friedrich Kühne as a part of its team since 2014. He is a dedicated and results driven winemaker with a wealth of experience in South Africa, France and the USA – with numerous awards and accolades providing generous testimony to his skill. His planning ability, technical knowledge, perseverance and absolute passion for quality wines has added enormously to the ability of Welgegund to coax it’s soils into continuing to produce the exceptional wines that are hallmarks of Welgegund’s heritage.
